Fiona Gray

Artist Statement

I paint to capture the essence of a subject rather than its literal details. Colour is at the heart of my work, and I embrace an experimental approach to oil paint, allowing intuition and feeling to guide me. My influences range from the bold simplicity of Gauguin to the expressive freedom of the Impressionists, as well as the evocative works of Rose Hilton, Christopher Wood, and Mary Fedden.

Self-taught, I have learnt through studying both historical and contemporary artists, finding my own voice along the way. My paintings are often described as uplifting and joyful, with a sense of humour woven into them. Ultimately, my work is about expression—distilling the world around me into colour, shape, and feeling.
